CHRISTIAN TOTH ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Christian Toth is a well-known and prolific graffiti artist, recognized globally for his influential work in street art. Having painted in over 40 countries, he has left a lasting mark on urban landscapes and the broader art community worldwide.

In 2021, Christian was featured in Rolling Like Thunder, a graffiti documentary produced by Mass Appeal and released on Showtime. He was also highlighted in Reefer Madness, a short documentary that earned Best Short Documentary at the Festivus Film Festival in Denver, Colorado. His work has been further showcased in a two-page spread in Graffiti World: Street Art from Five Continents — the most comprehensive and bestselling survey of graffiti art ever published.

Christian’s artistic journey was forged in the vibrant world of global street art. Growing up between New York City and Halifax, he was deeply shaped by the energy of the 1980s and 1990s New York graffiti scene — a foundation that propelled his evolution into a full-time artist. Beyond his own practice, he is an avid collector of art, including NFTs, and is passionate about championing the work of fellow artists.

For a decade, Christian served as Event Coordinator and Director of Hopscotch, the City of Halifax’s annual three-day festival celebrating large-scale visual art and murals. Under his leadership, the festival drew over 10,000 attendees each year across multiple venues in Halifax and Dartmouth. His responsibilities spanned securing funding and sponsorships, developing creative concepts, managing site logistics, navigating permits and safety requirements, negotiating contracts, and collaborating closely with property owners, stakeholders, and a diverse roster of artists to bring ambitious public art projects to life.

During the 1990s and 2000s, Christian also devoted significant energy to graffiti filmmaking. As co-founder and Producer at a six-person video production company, he created several independent documentaries that garnered critical acclaim — earning Best Short Documentary at Denver’s Festivus Film Festival, along with honorable mentions and “Best Of” recognition at festivals in Brooklyn, Chicago, Cincinnati, and Anchorage, Alaska.

Christian’s fine art collections and features span an exceptionally broad range of platforms, including books, magazines, newspapers, galleries, websites, businesses, video games, clothing lines, music festivals, live art events, corporate collections, international auctions, and museums. Extended periods of living and working in Toronto, Canada; Copenhagen, Denmark; Mexico; and Brazil have further deepened the global perspective that defines his practice.

Beyond the canvas and the wall, Christian is a lifelong surfer who takes to the North Atlantic year-round — chasing winter storms and hurricanes with the same relentless passion he brings to his art.

ARTIST STATEMENT

“I believe the act of creating art is the highest form of human expression. Art matters because it conveys the depth of an individual’s experience while simultaneously forging a connection with our greater shared consciousness — with Source. Each person’s interaction with and interpretation of a work is unique, generating valuable personal experiences that help shape and evolve how we move through the world.

My artistic journey began in the world of global street art and graffiti, where I became a recognized and prolific figure across many countries. Over time, my practice naturally expanded in scope, scale, and medium — venturing into life-sized bronze sculptures, significant stainless steel works, large-scale exterior murals on commercial buildings, iconic light-based pieces, and modern multimedia installations. Each evolution felt less like a departure and more like a deepening.

Throughout this journey, I developed a genuine passion for learning new methods of creation — understanding how different processes shape both my artistic voice and the viewer’s experience. Each new material and technique strengthens my ability to convey emotion, energy, and story. The medium is never arbitrary; it is part of the message.

Today, my primary focus is the creation of original works of art from our studios — operating across Los Angeles, Mexico City, London, Toronto, and Halifax. Together with my partner and fellow artist Francis Lamb, we operate under our shared studio and creative venture, Toth Lamb — a space dedicated to the intentional production of original fine art. At the heart of my current body of work are my original lightbox multimedia paintings — singular, high-value pieces that sit at the intersection of light, material, and meaning, and represent the fullest expression of where my practice stands today.

Beyond the studio, I continue as a full-time, multifaceted visual artist with a wide-ranging creative repertoire spanning drawing, painting, furniture design, large-scale exterior installations, and sculpture in bronze, stainless steel, and Lexan. Most recently, I have expanded into the digital frontier — transforming elements of my existing body of work into Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) and bringing my art into new, boundary-pushing spaces.

The work continues. It always will." — Christian Toth
